Gardening On Vacant Land

By Courtney Hageman

Adding value to your property can seem like a daunting and joyless task. Lots of advance planning and budgeting are required, followed by prep work, the actual work and maintaining the final result. But these projects don’t have to deplete your wallet or your happiness.

Types Of Gardening On Vacant Land

A great way to add value to your property is by gardening on vacant land. What you plant in your garden is all up to you. Here are some different types of popular gardens you could consider.

Flower-BedFlower Garden

Flower gardens are the most common type of gardens. Flowers improve the property’s aesthetic by adding color and order to the property. Flower gardens often accompany houses; however, you don’t need to have a house on the property to plant a flower garden. If there is enough space, gardening on vacant land allows you the opportunity to make a profit.

Herb Garden

Herb gardens are becoming very popular. Herbs can thrive in very different spaces, whether you have a large space to dedicate to cultivating an herb garden or a tiny, urban apartment. They are the most adaptable type of garden. Unless you are planning on growing herbs in bulk, herb gardens don’t typically need a lot of space to grow. Many herbs can grow in diverse climates if maintained properly.

Vegetable Garden

Much like herb gardens, vegetable gardens are great options for both small and large properties. Large properties have the opportunity to grow ground vegetables such as carrots, potatoes and cabbage, even though these vegetables take up a lot of space horizontally. A common misconception is that vegetable gardens can only be planted on acres of property. However, there are many vegetables that don’t need a lot of room. Vegetables such as legumes and tomatoes can grow vertically on a trellis, taking up a minimum amount of space.

Vegetable gardens may seem like a big dedication, but they are relatively easy to maintain. The majority of the grunt work is done at the very beginning: cultivating the ground and planting. After all of that work is done, you just need to water and attend to the property every now and then and enjoy the final product every season!

Water Garden

If you’re looking for a way to add a little tranquility to your property, building a water garden is the way to go! These gardens often include a small, artificial pond that contains fish and water plants, such as water lilies. These water spaces can be as simple as a small pond or as ornate as a large fountain.
