It may seem strange to find a “sea” in the middle of the desert but in all actuality it’s just a big lake that happens to be salt water. With 115 miles of shoreline the Salton Sea is California’s largest lake with no beauty spared. The lake itself is known as the “crown jewel of avian diversity.” Over 400 species of birds have been documented at the lake as it is a major resting spot on the Pacific Flyway. From the visitor center it is just a short hike to a perfect spot for bird watching all day long. If you feel up to a more difficult trek you can get to the stunning sight of the mud volcanoes and mud ponds which are little volcano looking pieces of dried mud formed by seismic activity that actually radiate heat! This is an amazing place to see with enough area to explore that you’ll never get bored.
